With my friends, I talk about podcasts almost as much as I talk about my favorite television shows or movies. I love listening to them on walks, while I’m cooking, and hey, I might even listen to some at night instead of watching TV. I don’t even listen to music much anymore.
Well, except for the occasional Hamilton binge.
I get super excited when someone recommends a new podcast to me. Music just gets repetitive if you are walking home 40 minutes each way like I am. And while audiobooks have caught my interest lately, I am really into this idea of something that I only have to dedicate an hour to (and not 12 hours like my most recent book. Dear lord.)
My tastes in podcasts seem to vary a great deal and, compared to other wellness bloggers, you might see that I have some podcasts on here you have never heard of before. I am an economics and history major, so, naturally, my leanings tend to venture into that realm. I also like to pretend I’m funny, so I have podcasts that allow me to aspire to the comedians on there. They might be a little quirky, but hey, I really like them! I hope that you go outside of your comfort zone with some of my choices. And hey, maybe you’ll become as addicted to them as I have!
NOTE: I listen to these podcasts at 1.5x speed. It helps me get through a TON in a week. Try it out and I swear it will change your life.
True life: I used to be so terrified of getting murdered. I always checked the locks before I went to bed (did anyone else do that?!). This podcast feeds into this fear a bit, but in a weird, funny way. It is a true crime slash comedy podcast that is so brilliantly done. Have I mentioned how HILARIOUS Karen and Georgia are? I swear to you, this podcast is the one I listen to instead of watching TV all the time. i binged 100 episodes in a month!
Episode Recommendation: The Freshest Recording
I can honestly say listening to this podcast opened my eyes to something I had not thought about before: life within a prison. This podcast is actually written and produced, with help from a local artist, by people incarcerated at San Quentin State Prison. It’s nuanced view of prison, revealing the humanity within the walls is something incredibly refreshing.
Episode Recommendation: The Boom Boom Room
As a young, 20-something, I listen to this podcast thinking, “it is totally ok that I do not know what the heck I am doing.” In this series, Guy Raz interviews successful business people to figure out “the secret sauce” behind our favorite brands, including Jeni’s Ice Cream, Larabar, and Drybar. After listening to this podcast a couple of times, I now realize that there is no straight path to success, which, in some odd way is slightly comforting.
Episode Recommendation: Southwest Airlines
One of my favorite memories from my childhood is coming home from high school, sitting on the couch with my mom, and watching Oprah. So, when I discovered this “miniseries” podcast about how The Oprah Winfrey Show came to be, I was instantly hooked. Incredibly researched and featuring Oprah herself, it is one journey you should not miss!
Episode Recommendation: Not an episode per se but make you start from the beginning. Also, the bonus episode with Phil Donahue is so fascinating!
Most of the friends I have from college are either lawyers, aspiring lawyers, or in relationships with lawyers. Go figure. So, being surrounded by all of that legal jargon 24/7 (and binging on SCOTUSBlog) gave me a real interest in the intricacies of the Supreme Court. This podcast gives a nuanced view to all of the drama (yes I used the word DRAMA) going on in the highest court in the land.
Episode Recommendation: Justice, Interrupted
The words I would use to describe my taste in music are basic with a capital B. What can I say, I love a good junky pop hit with a strong beat. This podcast, in that case, speaks directly to my soul. Not only does it feature my favorite hits, but it goes in depth about what it is about pop songs that makes us tick. I did not even know there was this much to say about our favorite hits!
Episode Recommendation: Demi Lovato is Not Sorry
I am all about comedy podcasts (if you could not tell already), but I swear, Ira Madison III lives me bent over laughing with his jokes. Joined each week by comedians, journalists, actors, musicians, activists, politicians and more, Ira leads conversation at the intersection of pop culture and politics at a time when we’re all obsessing over both.
Episode Recommendation: DJTea
I try not to be too political on Instagram. However, if politics is your thing (as I am sure it is for everyone living in Washington DC), you have to pop into an episode of Lovett or Leave It. It might just be the most hilarious show about politics I have ever come across (and trust me, I have listened to a ton). It makes learning about current events issues actually exciting!
Episode Recommendation: The most recent! The news changes fast, of course
I have been a fan of Katie Couric for as long as I have probably been alive. When I found out she was doing a podcast, I had to see what the fuss was all about. Her interview style comes across so well in radio. She truly captivates the listener (and, who knew she was HILARIOUS) while interviewing some of the most interesting people on the planet, including Maxine Waters, Marie Kondo, and Martha Stewart
Episode Recommendation: Pete Souza
Now full disclaimer: Christina is one of my very good, real life friends from Instagram. However, even before I got to meet Christina in real life, I was listening to this podcast. It has such great interviews from In addition, be sure to check out my episode. It certainly brings me back to when my life was a little more chaotic!
Episode Recommendation: Besides for my own, AA082 with Jackie McEwan from Gluten Free Follow Me
I have no idea why this podcast speaks to me so much. However, for some reason, learning the history and biology of infectious diseases just speaks directly to my soul. If that does not convince you to check out this podcast, know that hosts Erin and Erin are absolutely HILARIOUS. They also include drink recipes (or what they call Quarantine-is) which leads to even more laughs!
Episode Recommendation: Tuberculosis: A Slow Burn
This is one of my newest podcast discoveries and I am absolutely OBSESSED with it. Hannah Hart (wildly successful YouTube star) and her best friend, also Hannah (Gelb) discuss life, love, and the pursuit of happiness in a frank and no bullshit manner. Every week the two Hannahs test out a new self-help fad and provide the listeners with candid feedback. It’s witty, honest, and an amazing guide to helping millenials survive this crazy world. Did I mention how HILARIOUS it is?
Episode Recommendation: No New Friends
Have you heard of the Bechdel test? You know, the test to see whether a movie is fair to its depiction of women? Well, the hosts of this podcast, Caitlin and Jamie, watch movies and discuss how women are portrayed in those movies! They are honest in their commentary, but always leave me laughing out loud.
